Project information
This project, developed within the Three-Dimensional Design Laboratory course, involved the design of a load-bearing three-dimensional structure made from a minimal number of flat-pattern elements, intended for use by children aged 2 to 7.
The challenge lay in creating an object capable of supporting a child's weight using only folding and assembly techniques, without the use of any fasteners or glue. Research began with a white cardstock study model, progressing to a version made of 2.5mm single-wall corrugated cardboard—a material requiring a rigorous study of mechanical anisotropy, as its strength varies according to the direction of the flutes. The final structure, built at 1:2 scale, consists of a single flat-pattern piece that transforms into a stable, safe form through strategic folding and interlocking—measuring 36.2 x 21.4 x 15.7 cm and capable of supporting up to 19 kg (equivalent to the weight of a 5-year-old child).
The project also included the creation of a technical specification sheet, a video record of the assembly process and a 360° view, and a reflection on the tolerances and adjustments required when translating the design between materials.
